Is it possible to make a background image on my home screen (not lock screen)? Or would that be available with GDR2/Amber?

Can I expect from MS to make a landscape view of my home screen? I would be happy to see that on WP8.

I'm not sure about the ability to add a background image to the start screen because all of your tiles would obscure the image anyway so perhaps MS don't see the point in allowing this. But, I do agree with your point on being able to rotate the start screen to landscape. I'd like to see that added at some point.

There is also a high contrast mode under Settings > Ease of access. Other than that there are no other options apart from changing the accent colours for the tiles.

There is an app called Tiles (or Tile?) that lets you make your own Tiles with whatever shortcut and whatever image you want. If you remove all the default tiles and replace it with Tonchi91-made tiles, you are there..more or less. THis one: Tiles | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (भारत)

It is a tedious job, but worth it.

there is an app that somewhat makes the tiles to form a unify background, you might want to give that a try.
