Text in ASCI characters

Trying to figure out why my text messages from my Lumia 822 coming through to my families basic Samsung and LG phones as ASCI characters and jibberish? Comes through fine to my wife's Iphone. Very irritating trying to communicate with my kids. Reboots don't seem to help. Never had this issue with android. Love the phone by the way. Any ideas?

Are you typing characters that would be emoticons on smartphones, such as ? That should show up as a smiley on a smartphone, but it might not work on a feature phone.
