Well although all devices are upgradeable I would wait and watch the launch devices that come with preinstalled 8.1.... So yeah wait till 8.1 Nokia might have a surprise or Microsoft branded phone might also be launched who knows...

Wait till WP8.1 and then buy a WP8 device. As soon as WP8.1 is launched, prices for current devices will drop. These devices are upgradable to WP8.1 anyway. So buying a Lumia 920, 925 or 1020 - would be more affordable with latest software in May.

If you're going for high end, I'd definitely wait for 8.1 when Nokia releases the 930

On Windows Weekly yesterday, Daniel Rubino said WP8.1 was not going to be released with a bunch of new devices. There would be a high-end device and a low-end device. I'm not sure there is much to wait for, hardware-wise, unless you want the latest and greatest. I doubt the prices of the current-gen phones will drop much.

If you can find a great deal on a WP8 device, then don't pass it up, but it is going to be a while until new Lumias come out. They are supposedly releasing new devices in June I think, but they most likely won't be much different than the Icon or 1520. If you need a large screen and top end specs and the Icon and 1520 aren't on your carrier, then I would wait it out for new devices or see if you can get them unlocked for your carrier.

My android phone which was about 18 months old, had become so unstable that it was not really usable anymore and I wanted to replace it with a high end windows phone, but I thought it was better to wait for new hardware (quad core, 1080p etc) so I bought a lumia 520 around Christmas which does me fine until the next generation is released.

So I guess both... Bought one recently and am also waiting for 8.1 hardware.

I would say wait till W8.1 is released and then get a new phone. The reason being, if you do a factory reset, you do not need to go through the WP 8.1 upgrade process once again.

Doesn't upgrading the software flash the memory of the device with the upgraded build? Eg. If you installed the Lumia Black update and reset the phone, you'd still have the black and GDR3.
    Isn't that applicable for 8.1?

I have WP8 now and would still buy one today knowing that WP8.1 was around the corner if there was hardware out there that I wanted.

If there were no good handsets out, I would wait. Unfortunately, there are too many great handsets out to not get one now.

    I'll definitely wait for 8.1.
Then if those new devices are not worth it, I'll buy a 1520.

Yeah, for what a 520 cost (I paid $39.00 for one) this seems like a pretty good plan. You have something decent to use and you can upgrade without ditching an expensive phone. I bought my 520 just to use a media player. If I need to, I can put a sim in it and I have a backup phone. Definitely worth $39.00.

The carrier version with Firmware is coming out between June and August. The stock version. With no OEM firmware comes out in April if your phone is developer unlocked. Its a free unlock :)

Should i buy now, or wait.

I dont think it makes any differance.
There wil always be a new phone and a newer phone, and al the 8.0 phonies wil be upgraded.
So way wait, as soon as 8.1 is a common good, WP9? is looking at the horizon.
    Wanted wait fot that?
My humble opinion is, buy what is available and you can afford,
and don't wait for wat maybe would come out............thats a long wait, because after that, there's always................a newer one.

It's a race you never win.

So pick what you like and stay with it.

Anyone on Verizon should buy the icon now cause were not going to see another Nokia till next year. Otherwise I would wait for the 920/1020 successors.

I think its better to wait for 8.1 hardware, because the integration between software and hardware will be more efficient and effective when Microsoft controls both of them.
