How much storage does "system" take up under normal conditions? My Lumia 1520 is showing 6.24GB, and I want to verify if this is a normal amount or not.

Thanks. I think 6.24GB is excessive. Is there any way to reduce this?

US, on an AT&T branded Lumia 1520, will the latest update and firmware, as far as I know. With a hard reset, where can I see which phone backups I have available?

Well this week has been beyond frustrating an extreme waste of my time with this phone. THe system storage went up to 9.8GB!!! and the phone would not function any longer with continuous restarts, and durings this the battery usage rate went up to 64% per hour. I have just performed a hard reset to factory settings but was pretty surprised to discover that there is only one back up to restore from. THe only backup available was from yesterday, so whatever problems I am having will likely be restored back onto the device. Where are the incremental backups saved if I want to select from an earlier backup or from one made months ago, like I can do in iTunes with my iPhone?

So after resetting my lumia 1520 to factory settings and then restoring the only backup I had available (apparently) the "system" storage is now down to 2.44GB.

Thanks. can't fully understand what the problem is here (if any) with the space allocated to system resources by default.

Keep an eye on it, you may need to take it back and get a replacement, make sure all your pictures and files are backed up.

I did a hard reset and restore that seems to have sorted it out at the moment!

I've restored mine about twice now already because of the same problem. I'm just really praying that 8.1 somehow helps with this weird problem. As doing a reset and having to re-login to everything is a huge pain.

This is why we need unlocked boot loaders, come on MS and Nokia unlock and take advantage of the free bata testing and development!!!

Wow... I'm right now at 6.42gb of system and 6.51gb in apps and maxed out of space! Can't wait for 8.1 preview to hit so I could then ("rumored?") store apps on card...

I had similar problem on Win 8.1 on my Lumia 925, but I have noted a problematic App lets say which upon its removal System storage in now back to 2.6 GB.

App in question was Asphalt 8 Airborne! It kept asking me for more space in order to update itself.

    I hope this helps.

I'm not a developer, so I don't have WP 8.1 yet. Still just running WP8 on my Lumia 925. However, my system storage is now up to 4.61 GB, and it also seems to have been related to Asphalt 8 Airborne. While I love the game...I have since uninstalled it because I'm tired of the storage crap issues it keeps grieving me with. After uninstalling the game however, I'm still at 4.61 GB for system storage. Forgive me for being ignorant but how exactly does one perform a "hard reset?" And, what will I lose in performing one?
