I think it is due to no data connection at all, not bandwidth problem. You didn't say where in the world you are located, nor which carrier you are using. But for me, here in US on AT&T, whenever I saw GPRS or EDGE, it typically means the 3G signal is too low and the phone tries to falling back to 2G or 1G. But typically that won't work wither as there is no 2G or 1G towers anymore in my area.
If you have full or near full signal in GPRS or EDGE, you may want to contact your carrier to see what can they do to help your phone connect.
