connection drops frequently since update 1

In the week or so since installing WP8.1 update 1, my phone has developed the habit of losing its cell connection. The icon in the corner shows plenty of bars, but I can't load web pages or receive calls or text messages. Turning the phone off and back on again fixes the problem for a few hours. Has anybody else experienced this issue? It's extremely frustrating, and I think my next step will be a factory reset back to WP8.0.
