I was trying to update my lumia 920 wp 8.1 to gdr2. I followed the instructions in the article from wmpoweruser.com http://wmpoweruser.com/windows-insider-app-delivers-windows-phone-8-1-update-2-to-any-handset-which-does-not-support-w10m-tp/.

I followed the instructions to the letter. Prior to allowing the update to install, I went to verify that it was the appropriate build, and it was not.

The problem now is that the phone states that if I don't install the update by April 15, the phone says it will.

How can I prevent this? Please help, I have no desire (at this point) to be on TP of WP10.

The same happened to me. Just back up your stuff and use the Lumia Recovery Tool to go back to a previous version of the WP8.1.

After that, update you phone through usual steps - avoid Preview for Developres; install Windows Insider and try to update again: WP8.1 U2 should pop up. Restore factory settings and you are ready to go.

I did all above - except the fact that my phone was updates to W10 TP - and now I'm using the WP8.1 U2.

I don't think you're going to get Update 2 if you have W10 available. All 3 phones I tried went right to W10. No Update 2. (1520, 1020, 520)

I think this happened because the Windows Phone 8.1 version on your phones were able to receive Windows 10 TP without any other update. If you want WP8.1 U2, try following the steps above. Worked for me at least. ^^

This is not an OTA, it is prep work to prepare a phone to receive Win 10. No one is meant to do this and stay parked on a "GDR2" which has not been tested for stability and function.

Strange, I follow those instructions on my 920 and I get an interim build - 8.10.14219.341. I have done this twice (factory reset via Phone Recovery tool) and both times I get that build. If I try to update after that build is installed I will get Windows 10.

I wonder if it depends on what build you are running prior to starting the Windows Insider app. When I used the recovery tool, it said it took me to 8.10.12393.890.

For those who are getting update 2 to install correctly, what build are you starting from? Are you already on the Dev Preview track?

Apparently the Windows Insider App has two builds. R1 and R2. Only R2 is getting Update 2.

I have R1. No idea what determines R1 vs R2. :/

Happened to me today - it's FIXED.

Backup your device ... HARD RESET ... restore your device from Backup ... itz GONE.

I think it was a bug in MS Server side and after they fixed WP10TP update path, GDR2 is no longer available
