    I sold a phone to a buyer, and forgot to take the account off that I use to test software, enroll in insider, etc.

    The buyer says he is trying to update software, but it won't let him, as it asks for my p/w. I don't remember ever being asked for a p/w when updating.

    Anyways, I told him to just delete that account but he says it won't let him. I do see the device under my devices in my MS account. It looks as if I remove the phone, it says it will have to be hard reset prior to using it again.

    So - how can I help this guy remove that account w/o hard reset, or is that the only option?

    Yes, a hard reset is the only option. WP, under any circumstances, doesn't allow you to remove/delete your primary Microsoft account which you had used to sign in to your phone during the initial setup. That guy seems suspicious for the password thing. Just ask him to hard reset asap!!
