Hey,

I've got a Samsung Focus running Mango and I don't have active service on it. I like to just play with it on wifi, but due to WP7 shutting off wifi when I lock the phone, I don't get instant notifications (I use Google Voice, so I can receive texts/other notifications).

With the news yesterday about the ChevronWP7 unlocker, I am considering doing the whole homebrew thing. My number one reason to do so would be to allow persistent wifi. Before I do so, I wanted to ask if anyone knew if this was possible...so is it?

Just a note, I do know that I can have persistent wifi while plugged in...but I don't want to have my phone tethered and sucking power at all times.

Thanks!

Some apps can retain a WiFi connection, such as streaming music. I wonder if it's possible to code a chat client that will do the same thing?

From what I know, you won't be able to get such an app as of yet. It will probably require lower-level access, which is still being explored at the moment.
