He can't use anything Qi on the AT&T version. I believe he has to purchase the charger and the special back plate to allow PMA charging.

Yes you can... It's a micro USB qi receiver that chargers wirelessly through the micro USB port instead of directly to battery... I run one on my 1020 and my dad uses one on his 1520
