2 weeks in with 8.1 beta

hello all,
i just traded my note 2 for a lumia 920 with 8.1 installed on it. I'm really liking the OS and I can get past the crappy apps because they can only improve but before I go out a commit to a new wp, I'd like to know if the random freezing is just because of the beta os i'm running.
although it's an old phone i'm pretty sure the specs are sufficient to run basic day to day apps.
Not being familiar with wp, i'm not sure how to check for updates to 8.1 or to take it back to stock or are there custom os's available to flash similar to android?

Could someone enlighten me? Thanks.

First off, welcome to WPCentral and the world of Windows Phones. If you're running 8.1 beta or on the Preview for Developers, the random freezing is the result of the missing firmware update, i.e. Lumia Cyan. The 920 is more than capable of running 8.1 even though it's a 2 year old phone. Depending on where you are at, the Lumia cyan update should be available for all 920's. The only downside to that is if you are running the developers preview of Windows Phone 8.1, you'll need to downgrade the OS to WP 8.0 via the Nokia software recovery tool then you'll be able to receive the official 8.1 with the Cyan update. thanks! I downloaded the recovery tool but it wants to install the cyan update right away. Then it fails.
Any idea how to downgrade with this tool?

Describe exactly what is happening when you try to use the recovery tool.

I get this screen upon connection... it downloads, the prompts for install, then fails and asks to recover. I'm assuming because this isn't the downgrade.

Do you have any music, files, etc., that you can't afford to lose? If not, do a hard reset of the phone (Settings > About > Reset Phone,) then try to do the upgrade again.

i wiped and retried, but it has failed twice again.
all the instructions online say I should be getting an option on which version i'd like to install but my nokia recovery only prompts for the update.

I changed usb ports and shut off my antivirus. Not sure what specifically did it though.

I was just about to suggest trying a different USB cable. Glad you got it working.
