2g or 3g

From what I understand I will get better reception in 2g but slower internet but the battery will last longer is that true?

The battery will last longer, assuming that the 2G signal is the same strength or stronger than 3G. Generally, unless the 3G signal in your area is relatively weak compared to the 2G signal, I'd recommend that you stay on 3G and flip-flop between that and airplane mode.
