5 Device Limit

Hello All,

I have to return my Nokia Lumia 900 and swap it out for one that works

Basically the upper right hand corner makes a clicking sound. Also when I have the phone plugged in, sometimes the phone is unresponsive (touch screen that is)

I had broke the screen of my HD7 twice, and so my problem is that I used my insurance to get a new HD7. My first nokia lumia is techincally device #4 when in reality it is only my 2nd windows phone.

When I return this one because of hardware fail, I will be at device #5. How to get I get it reset so that I don't have to repurchase software I already bought? Both of my other HD7's were returned to T-Mobile. I have the 3rd one with me, and then I have my Lumia. that is only two devices. I am concerned if this one I will swap out today goes bad then I have to repurchase apps or along those lines.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I would assume your old devices would have been hard reset where your Windows Live ID is no longer associated with them and therefore you're not at your 5 device limit.

I'm not 100% sure that's how it works, however.

It will tell you that you have hit your device limit and basically you won't be able to download any apps from the market, use your Zune pass, etc. So go into Zune, settings, accounts, computers and devices, and remove the old devices. If you used Zune on more than one PC you probably need to clean them all out.

That won't work.

I just did the same thing.

Deleting your old phones from Windowsphone.com will NOT delete the associations with the Windows Phone marketplace.

You could only do that through Zune, which Microsoft has now broken (so you cannot do it). As a result, if you upgraded (or had numerous broken devices as I did), once you hit the five device limit, you cannot use another phone.

You're screwed until Microsoft either reactivates Zune or decides to allow users to delete devices some other way.

I am in the same boat. And furious.

Contact zune/wp support. They should be able to fix it on the backend.

You go to Settings -> Account -> devices. and remove or click forget this device under the device.. cant remember you select them by the silhouette at the bottom.

You never deleted them from the marketplace to begin with.

Just last week I was able to remove and add devices for Apps through Zune. I had them wiped because I was at the five device limit, and now it's disappeared. Was this a recent change?

Those instructions don't work anymore. Zune only lists computers and zune devices now.

I hit my limit with my second lumia just a few days ago. I have had well over 5 devices, but I guess I forgot to delete a few in the past. I had to use the Windows Phone support website to chat with a support specialist. She ended up forwarding my info to some other team so they could reset my device list. I was able to download apps on the phone within 10 hours I would say.

Also, as others have said, deleting devices from Windows Live/WindowsPhone.com does not alleviate this problem.

Windows Phone is a Zune device

I just fired up Zune. It shows my Phone and my Zune HD though

maybe post some screenshots. I wan't to see whats missing in Zune for you.

Have you tried clicking settings in the top right, then account, then computers and devices? That should be the same thing if what I have been reading is correct.

The whole WP 7 thing have been developed by a bunch of inexperienced, narrow minded guys who have hardly travel out of their country to see the world. That's why WP7 isn't designed for people who change their handphones like cloths that they wear...or for those who owns multiple handphones. The developers mind are stuck with the concept of contract with 1 service provider when in fact millions of people owned open, non-binding phones or even have accounts with multiple service providers. They dot expect consumers to buy WP7 phone from one country & use in another or you will use yr existing WP7 phone when you travel cause you can't download some apps meant for the other country..

Sadly, I must agree. Between my original HTC Arrive, which I then replaced with several broken Lumia 710s in succession (wow was the quality poor on those -- worse than an original Palm Pre) and finally a Radar that Microsoft broke with their disabling of Zune access to the marketplace "authorized" phones, I had my fill.

Apple and Google wouldn't make such a user-unfriendly move.

I tried reaching out to Microsoft support, spent about five hours Googling and calling (only to get nowhere), searched Microsoft's support site (only to find an article advising me to use the now-broken Zune client). When I tried to find phone-based or e-chat tech support, Microsoft punted me over to the handset vendors and the carriers -- neither of which are responsible for Zune functionality and the Windows Marketplace. I finally said "why the **** am I wasting hours on this?!? This isn't customer support. I'm done."

Took the phone back to the store, got a refund, and bought a new iPhone 4S from Sprint.

Yeah, it's not dual-channel HSPA+, it doesn't have the great Metro UI, etc., but it's usable enough and I'm also pretty sure Apple wouldn't suddenly shut down and break iTunes without warning while preventing users from doing really simple things (like device associations with the App Store).

I cannot be without a properly-functioning phone for days, weeks or months while Microsoft "figures things out." Neither can most users.

Can?t understand all this crying about Zune client. I don?t use it for long. I simply use Marketplace at the phone or I go to WindowsPhone.com. It?s way more practical.

Why I would need to go to PC start Zune just to install an application?

Don?t you Apple users saying this is a Post PC era? So why do you still use your desktop computers just to install an application on your mobile phone when we are in Post PC era?

Without Zune, today, when you hit the 5 device limit, your phone is essentially bricked.

Do me a favor -- log in with your Live.com account on four other devices, then upgrade your phone to another WP handset. Tell me how great your app experience is on the "sixth" handset you logged in with.

(Hint: none of your apps will be installed or work, and you'll get a message telling you that you've "exceeded the five device limit" and to uninstall one of your devices with the Zune app... which has since been broken so you cannot use it with your phone).

You can then come back and proclaim how glad you are that Microsoft broke Zune player, and that you're perfectly happy not having any of your apps on your phone work.

Or, more likely, you'll search the web for answers for hour after fruitless hour before finally giving up and taking your shiny new Lumia 900 or other "hero phone" back for a refund and exchanging it for an iPhone, BlackBerry or Android device.

Windows Phone Marketplace devices ARE NO LONGER LISTED in Zune and cannot be removed for the purposes of freeing up one of your slots for a replacement device.

Can't you just delete them using https://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/account?

I see a remove button right there.

Also, check out devices.live.com

And if everything fails, why won't you contact Zune support ?
