640 XL: Backlight/panel fault, or driver fault?

Before I start, I want it to be known this is not a rant. I am a hardcore IT and qualified electronics engineer, and I know things aren't always (or never!) perfect, and flaws exist, so I am not annoyed or upset, in case I sound like I am. I am 100% utterly confident this will be resolved, and I also know that symptoms like this are sometimes driver-related:

Got a bit of a niggle with the device, could be a fault, unsure - on medium/dark grey backgrounds (IE, some settings panels) there is a very prominent but gradient-esque VERTICAL LINE on the screen (not pixels, it's something backlight-related, pixels are all fine, have examined from all angles and planes of view) from top to bottom just to the left of centre screen. Visible enough that my Mum noticed it IMMEDIATELY, but only visible in greys, but still VERY annoying.

Any ideas, folks? Thank you (Photos attached.)

This might sound stupid but remove and reinstall your sdcard and also check for updates, fyi I never had this problem just something similar but less intense.

[UPDATE]: Just doing a factory reset (still using 8.1 update 2) to see if that clears it - doesn't matter too much as I've only just set it up with a couple of apps, so won't take long. We shall see...

Yep, I am going to upgrade to Windows 10 tonight (this is on 8.1 Update 2) - I have removed the card now, am booting it to see if there's any change, and will then power down, re-insert it and power on again; what exactly would removing and re-inserting micro SD do?

I take it my comment about Windows Phone's display driver causing the issue was probably right then, as you've mentioned updating my firmware? :)

Thank you :)

Okay, getting a bit fed up now - I have reset it TWICE, with SD card in *AND* out, and the stripe is still there! The only thing not yet tried is the upgrade to Windows 10, but I didn't have this stripe on my LAST 640 XL...

[UPDATE]:

Trying to upgrade to Windows 10, let's see if that helps (why would it? I have no idea)

Hello. Just had a thought - you didn't mention whether your updates fixed the problem you once had; did they?

I do not know, all I know is that I had a similar problem and got fixed that way, I was already on win10 thought. My phone had a vertical line with washed out colors and after I did wat I told you it fixed itself but gradually, in like 10 hours it was back to normal. Also when I putted it on standby the screen didn't shut down, it just went black.
