8-->8.1 upgrade

I have a Windows 8 Pro license key that I bought 3 years ago when Microsoft was selling w8 upgrade for ?15. I installed it on my laptop, but a year later I reinstalled windows 7 and sold the laptop. Now I'm trying to use it again on my new Dell laptop which came with w8.1 home, but the activation process is not going through, and on getting "invalid key" error.

Has any of you faced this situation?. Do you think downgrading to windows 8 first, then upgrade to win 8.1 pro will solve the issue ?.

Have you tried asking MSFT support why the key is not activating or working?
