830 camera suddenly stopped working, intermittent

I was on vacation in Key West last week when halfway through the trip my camera stopped working altogether. It would just crash back to the start screen. I was pissed! No camera app would work, just crash. I tried a reset and a soft reset with no joy. Then about two days later I noticed an update to the Lumia Camera app and hoped this would fix the problem. I couldn't download it for some reason because the phone "Couldn't connect to the Store". Well I finished the trip and on the way home in the car I had my phone in the cup holder and somehow it took a picture by itself! When I got home on my own wifi I was finally able to download the update. After the app installed I did a normal reset and it worked! The camera functioned normally after multiple openings and closings, with the camera button and manual app opening. I thought this fixed it. About 4 hours later I went to use the camera and now I'm back to crashing apps. Again no resets worked, I can't "reinstall" the camera app to try that again. I've read other threads about having the hardware go bad (my phone is only 2 months old) and having to send it back to MS. But the app update temporarily fixed it. So I'm wondering if it's hardware or software here. I wish that ATT would freaking release Denim already to see if that helps but since they suck @$$ so bad I'm wondering if they will ever release it. Should I wait around for Denim to see if that fixes it or just send it in to MS to be repaired?

It can be a "intermittent" hardware failure or "software driver failure" but what you could do is use the WPRT and reinstall the software. If that does not fix it then sent it back to MS.
If you do a hard reset the phone's software is reinstalled but if there is a "problem" with the installed software the WPRT will fix it and if it's not fixed it is hardware related.

I however hope that you still could enjoy your holiday.

Try the Lumia Software Recovery Tool and see if reinstalling the OS would fix the solution - this should rule out the software-level issues.

But when it comes to waiting, that depends on how essential your camera is for you or how much the phone is worth to you given that it has a readily-accessible camera, and on how much you are willing to wait since both sending the phone to a service center for in-warranty repair and anticipating the release of the Denim update through your carrier imply waiting.

There's a chance, however, no matter how slim, that your phone will be replaced depending on the policies of the store from which you bought your phone since your phone is relatively new.

If I were in your situation, I'd first try LSRT. If that doesn't work, then I'll have the phone diagnosed, repaired or potentially replaced - the peace that a hardware-level solution brings is more settling than a software-induced remedy.

Well the restore didn't fix anything. Ive been looking for info on how to send it in but can't seem to find info on the repair center. Anyone have a link?

Not sure if things are different where you're at, but most official service centers should be able to receive repair requests if you bring your phone to them directly.

Had this also about a half year ago with my 830. Resetting and reflashing original firmware was no solution. Device was replaced under warranty and since than no problems.

Hey, I had this two weeks ago, you (and I) are not lonely! There's about 5 or 6 people on this forum complaining about it recently... No tool will help this (not even Nokia care suite). Bring it to Nokia Care thru your warranty and let them fix it :\

Are you speaking of a warranty repair center? That's what I need is warranty service.

Yes. Since your phone is only two months old, it should be covered by the 12-month warranty period for free repairs and replacement of parts (if needed). Just bring your phone and the official receipt of the phone to any accredited service center or Microsoft store if there's one nearby, and tell them what's wrong with your device.

I submitted a warranty claim and have shipping label printed to send it in. Will a Microsoft store replace a phone on the spot? I have one nearby.

Experienced the same thing on my L830, I tried all resets, soft, hard, recovery tool... No luck... The problem still persists. What I did was I send it to the service center, they fixed it and got my device just now.

Unfortunately, they will not replace it if they can still repair it. They'll only replace it once they can't fix it. In my case, I asked for a replacement but they insisted on repairing it first, fortunately, they managed to repair my phone.

As what rigorimpossible said, they "will" replace the phone but they would most probably try to repair the phone first especially if the phone is already beyond the product-replacement period (usually 7-14 days after purchase).

Took the phone into the Microsoft store and they swapped it out after I explained what happened and everything that i tried. Setting the new phone up now.

Weird thing happened to me just an hour ago, and the moment it happened, this thread came up on my mind.

I was checking cameras with my girlfriend, back was ok then i switched to front camera, succeeded to take two photos then camera app blocked. I closed app, tried again no luck. Tried Lumia Camera instead and I got "something went wrong" and kicking me to menu almost instantly. Soft reset didnt help i turned off my phone for couple of minutes, turned back on still no help then i did hard reset and it worked but all my settings was reset. Time, date, some logins, settings in some apps :S

Dont know if that means it was a software issue or I need to br worried of something else....

Same thing here :( the Camera app is not working and I switch to use the Microsoft camera but the problem is that every time I take a pic I have to go and edit it and rotate it.

Both of you Luis and Wahadinho, get your phones to Nokia Care under warranty... No fix on internet will solve this.
With all of these complaints in such a small space of time, I guess there's some hardware flaw killing 830's cameras.
