Active Fitness and Winter Sports apps add over 50 new Microsoft Band 2 activities

Owners of the Microsoft Band 2 can add a bunch of new activities for the fitness wearable. Active Fitness recently updated its main Windows 10 Mobile app, along with its Winter Sports app, that allow them to add over 50 new activities to the fitness wearable.

I added dog walking and normal walking tiles to my Band 2 however the dont actually do anything - I can't start tracking these activities from the band 2 itself.
Am I supposed to use the phone to track and the band to display a summary?
So far the app is pretty useless to me like this, or do I need to be premium to start and track via the band.
