I like to have a tile on my home screen for Google search. Here is what I did:
a. go to the Google site in Internet Explorer;
Google home page.png

b. pinch to zoom in on the Google logo so that it is square and centered with the top half of your phone's screen;

c. "pin to start" without zooming back out
some different sizes:

d. select the size and position you like and your new tile will look and function like a proper Google search app should!

Wow, this is great, cheers for the tip! I have it as a small tile, but didn't know this trick with zooming in!

Excuse me, but I'm not sure what the hell you're talking about. Straight from Google Inc. and I have no adverts.

Google | Windows Phone Apps+Games Store (United States)
Calm down. I hadn't seen that one from Google, Inc. before, thanks for pointing it out. I searched for the app and ended up installing the one from eyeacker or something like that, which has the ads.

The Google app is good, but I prefer to use Google search in internet explorer, so that I have all of my bookmarks available.

Glad you liked it. For a higher resolution enlargement of the Google logo, try first switching to the desktop version of the internet explorer browser in settings. When you zoom in on the logo, the image is much sharper than on the mobile version.

Another thing you can do is go to this cool website that allows you to create and pin your own tiles of any website:

Windows Phone - Custom Tile Creator

It has icons from many popular sites, or it allows you to do a web search for icons of any site you type in. With this, your tiles can be sized to any tile size and be scaled correctly.

You can also try my app Pin it! which is exactly for what you want. I believe it is the best way to pin websites to start screen.
