Which volume setting controls the stock alarm app volume on WP 8.1?

I always thought that in WP8 alarm volume wad controlled by the volume, then in 8.2 controlled by Media + Apps volume. Since owning my 520 I've religiously before bed turned up the volume - how wrong I was. Last night I forget, phone was on silent but alarm still went off. Must be default volume, not sure how heavy sleepers would cope with this.
