Can anything be done about the annoying fan noise on the surface pro 4? mine comes on when playing simple videos.

CPU usage is not even high.

couple things you can do.

In the advanced power options make sure CPU cooling is set to passive and the maximum CPU usage is less than 100%.

Depending on the task you may not notice. My old Core 2 Duo laptop didn't see significant web browsing performance degradation until I capped max CPU usage at around 15-20% IIRC.

What kind of videos and which program? I use vlc (desktop) and never heard the fan on the i5.

My fan kicks on with one tab opened in Edge. It's quite annoying. I don't get why the processor randomly gets so warm and needs cooling.

It seems to vary alot between different machines.
I have one with i5 and i only hear it when i play World of Warcraft.
Normally the fan never comes on.
And even when i play a game its only a whisper.

If the Olympics gave a medal for persistence you would walk away with gold, silver and bronze!

Behave yourself and try to understand the M3 will not be for everyone..I bought the i5 because I want the i5. be pleased for me as I am pleased for those who bought the i7 or spent their money on a holiday away from persistent people. Have you thought about a long holiday. I will pay for it if you stop ranting on about the M3 being the answer to world famine and a cure for the pox!

Hahaha you think we haven't tried? Countless people tried, they all are amazed by his fetish for the m3.

Back to topic, glad to hear that the i5 has no fans most of the time, great improvement from initial release.

Just go to the WindowsCentral.com homepage in Edge (stock host file) and wait a few minutes

Funny. :)

But the host file for Edge might be the very first config change I made to my I5 SP4.
Having said that, I don't think I have heard my fan or felt any warmth yet either. Doesn't surprise me since I don't play any games and I adjusted my "power plan" for optimal battery life. (Just experimenting)

Boltman would be happy to hear that I WOULD have bought a M-core SP4 if it wasn't a ram-sissy. Even if you don't push your processor, it silly to be limited on ram for no reason but to upsell. In fact, although I am not a normal customer for saying this......I would pay Microsoft the SAME DANG PRICE for an 8 Gig Core M SP4 as I did the I5-8gig. (As long as the SSD was the same size too)

I have an i5 SP3, considered the SP4 briefly, but I can attest that Edge goes completely bonkers when visiting this website. The memory usage climbs exponentially; it'd be comical if it wasn't so ridiculous.

Also, I know I have an SP3, but the fan whirls up on my machine when watching videos in a web browser. Youtube, Netflix, etc. will cause it to fire up pretty strong. With apps, it behaves much better. I don't get the aggressive fan when using the the Netflix app, though Skype can cause it fire up.

And I thought it was only me, yeah, I see CPU usage going up tremendously, and the memory footprint is 270 MB, but just windows central open on Edge. I turned off page prediction and that helped a little but it's still pretty bad. Maybe it's related to the 10000 ads that are on a single page.

Edge will get better especially when that adblocker gets released. Right now, Edge is really RAM heavy and CPU heavy. So it's whether you can live through the growing pains because it does have cool functions like the web notes and it's the best touch browser (though Modern IE was better for touch).

I have an i5SP4

Not sure what I'm hearing, but it's either the fan or it's some static type noise from something else. I don't play many games, so I hear it after it's been on for about 2-3 hours just doing light work and surfing the web.

Can anyone tell me what I might be hearing and what I should do about it?

Thanks.

I notice sometimes when the default windows anti-virus program is scanning, the fan will turn on.
Also when I am browsing Wikia.com (with either Edge or Chrome) the fan runs quite frequently.
