I recently purchased a secondhand Surface 3 (2GB) tablet. Very happy with it.
Its running Windows10 Anniversary Update.

Do I need to install an antivirus application onto it? Concerned that this would really hinder its battery life.

as long as you keep it updated and be smart about your browsing, you'll be fine with the default windows defender application that comes standard with windows 10
