I have a HTC One M8 with WP8.1, which I purchased on Nov 2014. I also have the Preview for Developers app.

After a few months of using my phone, I noticed that it has been overheating on more than one occasion. I did some online research and tried some of the things that were advised.

I finally had to reset my phone after none of the suggestions worked. It helped my phone for a few weeks and I never had the issue. Until recently, I am having the same problems (battery also drains) and HTC could not help. Their support did not even know what to do with WP8.1!

I have been observing it and I notice that it seems to only happen when I text. However, I just realized that it does not happen all the time. It seems to only coincide when I text someone I know that has an Android phone. This could be just a coincidence, but it's hard to ignore, knowing that Google seems to want WP to fail.

Any thoughts?

if this is serious, how does google "know" that you are texting (before the text arrives at your friends phone). And how can Google control your windows phone?

No offence really, but that is the funnest thing I have ever read, How in the world would your phone know you are texting someone who is using a Android phone or Google for that matter. I can see it now, my friends Android phone gets a text from me a Windows phone user and a hidden program in the phone sends back a hidden message to my phone to use more battery power during the text message, What an Evil plot from Google !
It is not Google or Windows that is draining your Battery or making your phone heat up, It is the battery drain that is heating your phone up and I am sure it is an App you are running that is doing it, delete app's until the problem goes away then you will know the Evil culprit and turn you Wi Fi sense off.

What was the last app you installed before it was getting hot and started draining the battery? Was it Skype?

Thread is closed, since the OS used by family members/friends devices will not have any effect on one's device during texting.
