Okay, I just upgraded from the 521 to the Icon this weekend. I love my Icon dearly but the 521 destroys it in the speaker department. The 521's speaker is louder and clearer at any volume level. The speaker is the one major disappointing thing of the Icon (having come from the 521).

Still going to keep my 521 around as it's good for a lot of things and will definitely be better with 8.1 since the 521 has microSD support (and you'll be able to store apps and apps data to the memory card! yay!!!) whereas I'm stuck with 32 GB on the Icon. I'll use the 521 as a backup backup GPS behind my Icon and behind my dedicated Garmin as well as a nice Xbox Music / MP3 player.

I agree!
About the 521's speaker.
An often overlooked goody about the 520\521 models.

I agree! This phone's speaker and sound quality is easily the best on almost any phone I've ever used!

I think the only phone that came close was my Evo 3D.

521 speaker is just amazing. Don't be fooled by the single speaker in the back. I always look forward to making a call and use the speaker phone. Its like the Blue Ray of speaker phones. Now compare that to my previous LG G2 and the Nexus 4. Laughable.

I've had times when the speaker at 1 was too high!
Not complaining, but It's too loud on the lowest volume in a quiet room.

On another note the 521 can push high impedance full sized headphones to an acceptable level.

yeah, I've had similar experiences. I was gaming with the volume at 5. Dropped it down and it still had a stronger than expected volume. In this case, somehow the 521 should be more sensitive. Because you'd think a 5 would be very quiet, let alone a 1.
