Are unbranded phone really rare in US?

Last week I stay in US for a few days. Some people say that I was rich using unbranded smartphones ._.

Anyway I use roaming network from my home carrier but it seems not work. ._. Idk what happens but that's not really A problem since I got wifi signal around
