Are WP8 Tiles Ugly?

Yes, the entire OS is bland and the tile colors are utterly hideous. Hot pink? Baby blue? Lime green? Did Toys R Us design this thing? I'd be embarrassed for anyone to see it.

And why did they go with just solid colors?! It's like Microsoft went out of its way to take us back to the 80s. I'm having flashbacks of using an Apple IIe...

Another thing - This is the age of Retina and HD+ displays is it not? Then, someone explain to me why Microsoft insists on not leveraging these powerful displays in the OS elements. No gradients? No texturing? It's just downright lazy and void of any style whatsoever.

I say this as someone who is strongly considering the Lumia 920 due to its incredible hardware, but the OS just doesn't do it justice.

I don't agree that the OS is bland, but I completely agree with you on the tile colors.

I've been using WP7 for a year now and the only semi-good looking color is the "baby blue". The rest are utterly hideous.

Microsoft needs to introduce a black, grey, or otherwise non-flourescent color schemes that look serious much like the designs of some of their phones (such as a black 920).

It's a shame, because I love the stability and the fluidity of the OS, but honestly if I'm embarassed to show my home screen to my friends because "baby blue" is the only color that looks decent then I'll be moving to a different platform.

The colors are hideous? They may be limited with WP7.8 but they are hardy hideous.

I have a black L900 and I'm currently using the Nokia blue theme. Nothing hideous or kiddie or girlish abut it. I have used brown, purple, red and when I'm feeling expressive I've use mango.

I'm sorry but to me this entire thread is a non-issue.

It may just be me (and I'm almost certain it is), but as a pastor I love the ability with my WP to match my phone with the liturgical year.

Currently it is the season of Pentecost (or Ordinary Time for my Catholic friends) where 'Green' is the color of paraments and such. Next comes Advent which is blue, then Christmas which is white (for which I'll use the white background and switch around between blue and green and sometimes red).

Seeing all those colors in WP8 is going to be cool!

As a Lutheran minister, I even switch the color for important days. Reformation Day is on October 28th and the designated color is Red, my phone will match that day - and hopefully it'll be on a brand new and shiny Lumia 920 ;)

BTW - the Black/Green combo is my favorite, second is the black/blue combo!

Ahhh..."bee--u--tee" is in the eyes of the viewer

You need to read this blog post, there's a nice steel (grey) colour in there

I love the look of the tiles. That is one of the reason I stopped using my iPhone and got my L900. It is something different and when people see the live tiles flipping around they are impressed with the design and functionality.

Didn't blackberry pioneer icons all over the home screen in neat little rows and columns?
BB was doing this way before Jobs ever thought of an iphone. Maybe RIM should sue Apple.
As for the WP tiles being ugly I don't see anything ugly about a solid color. Choose your fav color.
Side note, I have a Maxx, an android device, but thinking about getting a WP8. On my Maxx I run a custom UI based on the WP tiles and I am able to choose a custom tile of my own custom color or something from my photo library. Does the WP devices have this option? I can also use a custom icon from the web as a tile. This gives me loads of options and keeps it interesting. Just wondering if WP's have this option or are they stuck having to use only preloaded solid colors. That's all I've ever seen anyway.

You're going to have a miserable time with your phone if you like the hardware better than the UI. I think iPhone makes amazing hardware, but i can't stand the stale interface. I would never buy an iPhone because I only like the way it looks when it's turned off.

I agree though. The tile colors are kinda lame, but more options are coming. Ita like MS made the tile colors METRO-sexual.

Lol, Nah, metrosexuals generally have excellent taste. What Microsoft has unveiled with these tile colors is just...clown vomit.
