The soft, suede-like fabric on Microsoft's Surface Pro Type Covers and the new Surface Laptop has become a staple of the brand. But it's also somewhat polarizing.
Alcantara, the Italian-made fabric Microsoft uses on some Surface accessories and the Surface Laptop, is soft and luxurious. (If you're not familiar with Alcantara, read, "Everything you need to know about Alcantara".)

I finally got a chance to see and touch at the local Microcenter. I was not impressed. It felt like cheap felt with a hard, coarse surface. The black type cover for Surface RT had polar fleece on the back. It was soft and did feel luxurious. It also helped stabilizing the Surface when typing (it didn't tilt like the newer ones). The Alcantara seems like it's just a rough fibrous coating. Sorry to say, it looks and feels like something got stuck to the keyboard.
