Auto mute when earphones plugs in

When I play music using music+videos and when I plug in my headphones the volume goes to mute (0). No matter what I do to increase the volume it goes back to mute. What's making it do this

I had this problem too. All I can think of is that the jack has a reversed polarity on it. try some different earphones
