Backups

I've decided that when Windows 10 Mobile is released I'm going to put my AT&T Nokia Lumia 830 on the Insiders Program to join my backup device, as it doesn't look like it's going to get it on its own. I'm also going to do a hard reset to make sure everything goes flawlessly, and start anew. Not a huge deal, I can handle losing all my text messages and such. However, I'm paranoid and want to make sure I have something to fall back on to. I need a backup right before I hard reset my device, so I need to know under what circumstances Windows Phone 8.1 conducts a backup and how often it does it. And if there's anyway to do it manually. Thank you in advance.
