I really hope it some how sorts my 920's battery problem... I have owned it for around 5 months, gone in for repair and was given a new one... Still had the battery problem.
I SO hope 8.1 fixes this, because I think it is crazy how bad the 920's battery is...

Do you have any battery app installed?

Nope, that drains battery. I have everything turned off, brightness on low etc... And simple apps... I'm not connected to Xbox Live or Xbox Music, I have done everything in my power to fix the battery and nothing works, there is nothing nobody can say that I haven't tried.

Ok, we will see in a couple of days then.

EDIT: I forgot, with 8.1 you have battery sence so you can see what it is that are draining you.

just in case... background tasks.....was a major killer for me

I'm expecting slightly worse battery life with 8.1.
They cant add all those goodies without some pain

I have 920 for a year and half now. Its battery is about on par with any other smartphone out there (I have used many WP phones and Android phones). Any smartphone can have some battery issue (insert any of Android phones here). It all boils down to somehow some app is using too much network traffic (e.g. certain email accounts) or a badly written app. It's usually not the fault of mobile OS (there are a few exceptions like the camera process in Google's Nexus 5 is burning battery down after you no longer use the camera). The Windows Phone 8.1's Data Sense and Battery Sense should give us tools to nail down which app is the culprit (if carrier doesn't block it).
That being said, I don't think anyone, other than MS employees, have a phone running WP8.1 yet. Obviously the emulators won't tell you the battery performance :)

I have been running 8.1 for a couple months and to be honest, I have not had any issues and as a matter of fact, it does do better for me.

We had a power outage not too long ago and I had my phone (1520) on the charger at the time (was about 7pm when it went out). I pretty much left it alone since I had no need for it and went to bed. I woke about 4am the next morning (alarm went off on the phone) since it was a work day and the battery was at 97%. I thought to myself that a 3% loss for 9 hours or so was pretty damn good.

I have push email on for multiple accounts, WiFi and BT were on (not connected), double tap to wake among a few other things (all my aps that use notifications and all that) and that was all it lost.

Installed WP 8.1 yesterday, and unfortunately I have to report that battery drains at light speed.
With wp8 my battery life was a full day, and sometime also a litte more, with normal office use.

After wp8.1 battery life is at most 6 hours.
I fully charged it yesterday at 22.00. I then used it until 00.30 (IE, twitter, a little facebook, map updates).
Switched off.
Switched on this morning at 7.00, now (9.30) battery is 19%

If I launch the Battery Save app, I see that, since yesterday the worse app that seems draining the battery is SKYPE (almost three time battery usage if compared with the second app, which is IE).

I'll try disabling background activity for skype and will update you

Bye
Paolo

Hey me too!.. ever since i moved to 8.1 DP, the battery life has taken a turn for the worse moving from 14-18 hours to hardly 6-7 hours :(
Battery sense shows Cortana as the main suspect suspect.. I have skype installed (but it comes in the bottom 4 of battery usage apps)
i hope she quickly finishes absorbing the internet or whatever it is that she's doing! :|

On my 1520, DP is eating battery like a cop on a donut!
I'm in the uk so I've not even enabled Cortana. :(
For some reason, background tasks says that Maps is using a large chunk of battery but I swear I never even launched the app! Is there some way to reset the background tasks figures after a complete charge?

confirmed ... charged my phone over night. In the morning it had 100%. After taking a shower and breakfast (~ 1 hour) it has only 12% left, this is insane! Checked Battery SEnse and I think Battery Performance isn't working anymore. It has no data since wp 8.1 upgrade yesterday.

Just to let you know my findings, my battery was plummeting this morning, but I have given it a soft reset and before it showed 43% and after it showed 78%.

I reckon its still trying to gauge the usage & capacity of the battery. Hopefully it'll sort it self out in the next 24 hours.

I seem to remember this happening after one of the GDR updates, and it settled down after I completely drained the battery to zero and recharged.

Since the DP the battery on my Lumia 920 is worse than before. I charged it 2 hours ago and now it only has 46%! :/

Let me chime in,I am running 8.1 preview and have noticed an improvement in battery life.Pretty surprised reading the comments.
I have Cortana too,in case anyone is wondering

No improvements and its turns out to be worse. My phone lasts for a day and a half and I charge only once a day. But after updating my phone last night. I charged twice already and one cost of this is Cortana and I am surprised with whatsapp. Never had issues with whatsapp in terms of battery draining issues. Well it's understandable since this is only beta after all. Hoping they fix this soon!

My battery life turned out to be quite the same, maybe slightly better. But what I did first after installing WP8.1 is a hardreset. That always helped me staying away from bugs others have experienced. After a new system version number (f.e. iOS6->7, WP8->8.1) I always did a hardreset and everything was working fine after...

I have observed the battery issue, which is draining more faster in W8.1 and another main concern is even for charging the battery also it is taking much more time than usual, literally couple of hours more. I have checked the battery sense and noticed that whatsapp is consuming more battery (note: I don't have cortana yet in India). This is a serious issue and to be fixed as early as possible.

Let's make things clear. After one day of 8.1 we can't know. Factoring in the fact that everyone is playing with their phone's new features, downloading updates and updating their phones, battery life is good imo.

Battery life on my HTC 8x has defiantly taken a dive. My Nokia 520 though has gone the other way and the battery is now excellent!

I am thinking of trying hard resetting my 8x but only doing it as a last resort. I'll leave it a few days yet.
