Best antivirus for Windows 10?

Hi! I'm new to these forums.

What is the most unobtrusive antivirus that runs on Windows 10? My dad is insistent that Windows Defender does not do a good job keeping Windows secure. I am new to Windows (I have lots of experience with OS X and the Mac), so I'm not really used to having to run 3rd-party software like that, and I don't feel comfortable downloading a program from a website (because on my Mac I got everything from the App Store) and I worry about the security of that.

I'm sorry if I'm not being very clear with my questions. If you want me to go into more detail on anything, please ask.

I would go for Antivirus from Avira. Unobtrusive, high detection rate and doesn't cost the world. There is also a free version available.

At home, I have been using Avast for years. We never had an issue.
Since I reïnstalled Win10 over a year ago, I am only running Windows Defender.

Common Sense Proffesional is what you actually needed.
All other antivirus is just make a malware easier to attack.

Agree 100%. I've been using Common Sense Pro since version 1.3 and I've never had any issues. All other anti virus programs are paranoid and hog system resources.

If you want ultra-protection against malware / root-kits / potentially unsafe software then it has to be Malwarebytes. It cannot be shut off by clever viruses because it has 'chameleon' as well as early start on your pc . I has protected me very well over the last 6 or 7 years and there is no monthly prescription. You pay about 20 and you have it for life. I have run it along other anti virus software and MWB trumped them every time.

This is an old post on a thread that has just recently become active again. But I noticed this post.

Did MWB change their payment structure? Because I only see subscription options - and they're much more than a one time $20 purchase. https://store.malwarebytes.com/342/purl-consumer?x-source=website&tracking=quantummetric

I have a Win 10 PC and a Surface Pro 3 and a Laptop running Win 10. I've used Windows Defender only for 2 years with no issues, I mean 0 viruses, no browser hijacks, no malware. I know several other people who have had the same results with Windows Defender. So I really no longer see a reason to pay for third party software. You can always download Malware bytes if you think you have another issue.

Don't use anti-virus software. Windows Defender is enough.

There's a ton of problems with anti-virus software, they generate more problems than they fix.

@Indistinguishable
That's odd... Malwarebytes discontinued the $20 lifetime licenses back in early 2014...

I suppose he got the license from an 3rd party vendor, maybe?

Edited: I found that some authorized sellers were allowed to sell such licenses a few months after the expiration date.

Oh, wow. If I had known they had a $20 lifetime subscription, I probably would have jumped on it.

According to his post, he'd been using it since 2007/2008. So he's probably grandfathered in. Pretty good deal.

Ahh, I totally disregarded how long he had the subscription.

I'm not sure how he was still able to keep the subscription a year after it has been discontinued... That's interesting.

Best and most important protection against viruses is your own brain. Don't click on mail attachments unless you know that you expect those and/or know they are legit (just because they seem to come from a person you know does not make them legit), don't click on links in mails that want you to enter logins/passwords, don't install apps from third party websites. And then you're safe. Add Windows Defender in the mix for some more serious viruses but truth is: If you are careful, you don't need any antivirus solution at all. If you are lazy however ...

For me it is Windows Defender together with Malwarebytes v3 and Voodooshield. This combination seems to work fine for me.

I use Windows Defender and Common Sense, panda makes a free tool called USB Vaccine that I use: ANTIMALWARE: Panda USB Vaccine - Download FREE - PANDA SECURITY it basically prevents USB borne malware from executing and allows you to inoculate all your USB drives so even if malicious files are written to them they will not automatically execute. its unfortunate that its no longer available a separate download to get it you need to download the free/trial version of Panda and search in the sub folders of the zip for the installer.

With Ransomware very much in the public eye these days something like CyberReason's Ransomfree https://ransomfree.cybereason.com/ would be good to add to your arsenal. it creates a honeypot of fake files which and warns you when a process attempt to encrypt any batch of files on the system.

Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials + the ad-blocker uBlocker (subscribe to additional malware lists) is suffice.

I use a combination of Malwarebytes which I paid for and windows defender.
I surf what some might consider unpleasant areas on the internet and have not had any issues with malware or viruses. I also have a strong adblocker ublock with most filters enabled.
Malwarebytes is great because it immediately blocks pages that are infected.
