If you are talking about the app....Lumia Camera 5.0 wins; though ProShot and Camera 360 are also good.
If you are talking about the hardware.... Nokia/Microsoft Lumia wins!

I use the HTC Camera on my M8 to take advantage of the dual lens feature.

What's interesting is that everyday shooters, not photography enthusiasts by any stretch tend to find the Ultra Pixel cam to perform just fine. Its fast and it produces nice images that are almost tailor made to upload quickly and easily into social media. The unfortunate thing is that because the camera doesn't measure up spec-wise with the vast majority of other smartphone cams out there so many people are quick to dismiss the HTC Cam as crap. Sometimes its not about the hardware, look at the 20MP shooter on the M9. Its not exactly lighting the world on fire...

Does anyone know if any software tweaks have helped the UltraPixel cam performance since its been out for almost exactly one year?

I go back and forth between the HTC Camera and Microsoft Camera. HTC Camera did improve when it received an update to version 2.0.
