Best way of updating to the latest Windows 10 Build?

I recently purchased a Lumia 640 XL, running Windows 10 (version 1511, OS build 10.0.10586.29).

Is my Windows 10 version the latest stabile one?

When I tried to click "update" a few weeks ago under the settings, it put my phone in an endless start-up boot loop.
Is there a "right way" of updating the OS on the phone? If yes, how?

I bought it second hand, and it had windows 10 on it, so it must have.

It is running Windows 10 (version 1511, OS build 10.0.10586.29).

Install the app Windows Insider Preview

Enroll for the stable program, not the fast one.

Restart and update your phone.

Now revert it back to factory settings, so you have a fresh install of the latest stable WIndows 10 Beta.

There is also a way to revert to Windows 8.1.
