The one I played with didn't seem to have that issue, but the main problem demo phones face is that they usually aren't updated to the latest software, and there are tons of people a day that go and abuse them, trying to mess them up.
Coming from the Focus, the HD7S's screen ghosting killed the experience for me. It's really bad. I've seen this on two demo units at different stores, both I power cycled before using. It also appears much dimmer than the Focus; at maximum brightness it was about as bright as the middle setting on the Focus. Dan did a comparison between the two (and the original HD7 on T-Mobile) if you're curious:

I loved the solid feel it had compared to the Focus, and the larger screen felt... right for me. I didn't care for the impossibly hard shutter button. I thought the first unit was broken until I tried the second. Huge negative for me.

Honestly, I've only dabbled with the Surround (the slide out speakers are pretty unnecessary and aren't even that good). Same with the Quantum; it's got a smallish, visually unimpressive screen and kinda weird styling, but a nice landscape keyboard and a very solid build. Having physical buttons on the front makes it easier to press them without looking and harder to press accidentally while gaming or doing other tasks -- a definite plus. And it supposedly gets the best battery life of all WP7 handsets, a category the Focus could certainly better in.

Still, the only clear choice for most people is the Focus. It's got that impressive though battery-sucking screen, a great camera, and it's sized about right, especially those coming from an iPhone.

I don't know if I've got a special Focus or what, but coming from Nokia's N86 and a Nokia N8, having my phone last all day and then some is much more than I can say from those two.

My Focus has a really good battery life, in my opinion. Could it be the dark theme I'm using? Black wastes no energy...

For the record, the only phone I constantly got a full day of use from was my Nokia E72. I'm a heavy user. I'm also not on WiFi often, and frequently in EDGE areas.
