With BioWARE I go back to KOTOR and JADE EMPIRE. Two masterpieces. When word got out that they were doing original IPs I cheered.

MASS EFFECT ONE I preordered and played for the better part of a year. New game+ repeatedly. Paragon, renegade. Get Liara first, get her last. Lose a different team member. Even got the sound track, so Alan Parsons Project.

MASS EFFECT TWO I played through to the end a couple times.

MASS EFFECT THREE I played through once. Barely. The online grind I skipped. The ending, not great. Still don't know why they refused the only reasonable ending and tried to muddy the waters. Given the histories of the major races, it was clearly us vs them; destruct. Too cute by half and more.

ANDROMEDA I quit after a month of grinding. The story was going nowhere.

ANTHEM I didn't bother with. The trailers made it clear it was nothing but online grind.

DRAGON AGE? Loved ORIGINS. Tolerated 2. Loved INQUISITION. Still go to it every year or so. Classic BioWARE, even in 2, story and characters shone.

VEILGUARD I was "guarded" about. I had a bad feeling about the lack of carry over and the focus on combat instead of characters and story. Then the credible reviews came out and I knew it was time to move on.

Will not pre order MASS EFFECT 4. Will not play month one.
Might wait for it to drop on EA PLAY. It looks like an EA money grab, honestly.

I'm not their target audience anymore.

Oh, I used to cite KOTOR as the greatest game ever made. Still in my permanent "best games of its day" list, but CDPR has the two top slots for me now with The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Obviously, I'm a fan of the story-oriented RPG. Sadly, I never played Mass Effect, in spite of it being in the same genre -- I prefer the giant open-world games.

Old school games like Wizardry, Zork II, and Ultima IV (and Lode Runner for straight puzzle/action games, where I'm probably alone in preferring that to Mario Bros a few years later) are also in that archeological dig, but now I'm getting way off topic.

No you're not alone.
I used to love LODE RUNNER on ATARI 8-bit.
Got it on 360 and bought a 360 Joystick to play it the way it's meant to be.
But I'm leery of going back to it too often.
Back in the day I got into "the flow" and got to level 150 with a ridiculous number of spare lives...at 4AM.
Decided that was enough of that.

On KOTOR I stockpiled thermal detonators and the last boss fight I just spammed the field with a couple dozen. Why take chances, right?

Mass Effect, at least try the first. It isn't totally open world but it it open enough for gameplay and every choice has meaningful consequences. I'm pretty sure the LEGENDARY EDITION is on EA PLAY for $4.

I suspect you'll like. It's the deepest RPG system in the trilogy. Just play Femshep.
Unique lines, like:
"Somebody up there needs my boot up their ass."
"No autopsy, no foul."

The final boss battle I was fighting for my life and most worried that Joker might scratch the paint on *my* ship.
You don't get better writing, even in the sequels. But they do get close.

Gives me hope for EXODUS.
