Anybody else finding the Insider Preview 10074 horribly sluggish on Surface 3? Everything stutters and freezes. Is it just me? Maybe I should go back to 8.1....

I was wondering when a Windows 10 preview thread would come up - unfortunately it's not a good as I wanted it to be.

Are you using the 2GB or the 4GB RAM version? Clean Install or Upgrade?

I upgraded my 4GB version to build 10074 and I would consider it unusable. The graphics driver is probably the worst part of it. So sluggish. The Spartan browser seems to be pretty slow as well. Not sure what to do at this point. Do you go back to a fresh install or just hope for a quick update to make it better?

I don't think the drivers for this new chipset are shipping yet for Windows 10, so it's best to hold off for now and keep the 8.1 image that comes with the S3. Hopefully they will be shipping in the coming months for 10.

Well, it is a preview ;) I think Neowin had an article about installing Windows 10 on the S3 and came to the same conclusion.

Yes, it is a preview and I expected that things would not be perfect. I've been running Win10 in a VM on my desktop since release. I agree with Neowin (saw that article after install the preview). As a developer, I like to work with the OSs before they are released. In this case, it's just too rough to be... useful. Slowness aside, they still have work to do to make it work as well as 8.1 does on a tablet. Going back to 8.1 from the preview made that very evident. Love my new Surface 3 though and I expect MS to get it right before release.

I really wanted to have that new Xbox App on my S3 though. Remote play is going to be so sweet!

I would not recommend installing 10 on a surface 3 yet, not until official drivers are also ready, but as long as you didn't not delete any install files when upgrading it should be able to rollback to 8.1

I'm honestly surprised Microsoft is shooting for a summer release, because as you stated it's still pretty rough right now, and IMHO to RTM in ~3 months is extremely ambitious.

I do want the Xbox One streaming as well. Already got my VPN setup and waiting

I imagine the graphics driver maybe the culprit, I have issues with the onboard graphics (Core i5 2450m - intel hd graphics 3000) on my laptop.

Fortunately as I have a dedicated AMD 7470M (6490M rebrand) as well, I have a work around until windows update decides to force feeds the buggy driver again lol.

Are you using the generic drivers?

Do these install for you?

Under the details there appears to be two Surface 3 files -
Surface3_150504.msi @ 145.2 mb

Surface3_150504.zip @ 225 mb

There is a post on answers.microsoft.com that might answer this
Please do NOT try to install Windows 10 on the new Surface 3 - Microsoft Community

There are no drivers in the Preview Build because Intel has not yet provided drivers.
There are no drivers for the Intel x5/x7 Atom processors

There is no block/check for these processors in current builds.
Timing of availability for drivers is unknown as Intel is still working on the needed drivers for the new chipset and processors.

It's not to difficult to roll back (as long as you don't do a disk clean up) and my friend found that link out after he set up his SP3 and it had the same issue, the fixed it's self after a restart. It's not too bad, the programs run fine, it's that the visual movement and launching is choppy.

I really wanted to have that new Xbox App on my S3 though. Remote play is going to be so sweet!

I have used Steam's in house streaming with my S3 and it is pretty awesome. Only tried it with FPS as I like the xbox controller to be hooked up.

I need to try this, so I can get my Skyrim fix. Thanks for the note. I did a total wipe back to the original install of 8.1 using the recovery control panel applet and all went fine. I'm humming along nicely. I'll wait for a build of 10 that includes the drivers before I try it again.

Hi dudejoe, I did a disk clean up! Oops!! Is there a way to get that information back?

Since that wiped out the data for your previous installation, the only next step is to re-install the OS, I am not 100% sure that it wipes the recovery partition, so a full reset may be your only option. If it did over write your recovery, you can download the OS here Download a recovery image for Microsoft Surface

Waiting for an updated driver is also an option
