Can AT&T locked surface duo receives software updates without service?

[Windows Central Question]

I am planning to buy an AT&T locked surface duo to use just on Wi-Fi without any cellular service and was wondering whether it will receive any software updates(security updates) without the AT&T service? Also does Microsoft push updates directly to the device or do they come from AT&T?

nope. found this out when I wanted to update an older phone. One workaround was to take he sims from another working att phone that has service and place it in the phone without service then update in the settings.

You must need AT&T cellular service to get updated...
