Can I upgrade windows 8 directly to windows 10 without updating to 8.1 first?

I have a desktop with windows 8 with media centre and I've been unable to upgrade it to 8.1. Tried many things but no luck. Always gets stuck at getting devices ready. I've downloaded the windows 10 iso. Can I use the iso to update to windows 10 without updating to 8.1 and have the windows 10 copy activated the same as my current 8 setup assuming the update works in the first place. Thanks.

Pretty sure MS has said the answer to this is no. You need 8.1 but I can't cite a source now. Pretty sure there was a article on WC about it.
