I've been reading about Paypass and was wondering if the 920 can be used to make payments in shops?

If the back cover has the NFC capable components in it. If not then it will not work.

Ok so do I take it that some Lumia 920 do and some do not? Or is that just a general comment for any phone?

despite the wallet app technically being able to do it.... as far as I know, it's not working yet (in the US on AT&T at least, not sure about everywhere else)

Officially, even in 8.1, the NFC tap to pay only works with SIM cards that can do wireless payment.

Has anyone anywhere ever made an NFC payment with a WP? All we're getting here is theoretical answers. But in the real world, is it even possible?

ISIS has confirmed many times that they have something planned for WP8 "soon". The Icon, when initially marketed, claimed to support ISIS mobile payments. So the possibility is there. Now that Cyan (and 8.1) will slowly be popping up on devices, hopefully the soon part from ISIS means over the next couple of months :)
