can the top tier SB replace a 5yrs old Thinkpad?

Hi!

I have a 5 years old thinkpad W510 (i7 820qm + nVidia quadro 880 + 8GB ram).. Could a i7 512GB model replace it?
i'm asking since the thinkpad has quad core (1st gen) i7, and book has dual core only... I use it for audio and video production (Cubase, Waves plugins, Vegas pro, Photoshop)

I have a ThinkPad as well but not as high end as yours, T420s. Mine is about 4 years old, and I'm hesitant to give it up because of the keyboard. I refuse to use a touchpad given how excellent the ThinkPad's touchstick navigates. I really don't understand why manufacturers are hesitant to put a touchpoint on business machines. These computers are all high end. They should have all the accoutrements.
