College Student Laptop?

My daughter is going to graduate from high school in a couple of weeks. I was thinking of getting her a laptop as a graduation gift. I'm old enough that we didn't use laptops when I was in school. I'm not sure what the right balance between performance and portability is for a college student. What laptop would you recommend? She'll be an illustration major.

My first thought was to get the new Surface laptop, but it looks over-priced and under-powered to me. My mind can be changed, but only if you can explain why it's worth considering.
