compare to
Microsoft Surface Book - SSD 1TB / 16GB LPDDR 3 RAM, Intel Core i7, $2,879.1 with 13.5-inch Pixel Sense touchscreen display, 6th Gen Intel Core i7-6600U processor clocked at 2.6GHz, but it can be boosted up to 3.4GHz, Surface Pen included, TPM chip for enterprise security, discrete Nvidia GeForce graphics card ? built right into the keyboard graphics processing unit (GPU), Windows 10 Pro, Ships by January 22

Besides Vaio Z Canvas has more ports and is available sooner than Surface Book...?

I'm very interested in these machines, and I think they're both pretty great. I've played with them each for maybe 30 minutes a peace in a MS retail store. Here are my takeaways:

  • The Z Canvas is much faster. It has a 47 watt quad core cpu, vs the 15w dual core chip in the Surfacebook.
  • Conversely, the Surface book is going to have much better battery life (when the keyboard is attached). Think 10 hours vs 4.
  • The Canvas has a substantially more vivid display at 95% Adobe RGB, vs the 75% Adobe RGB of the Surfacebook. That can be good and bad; Good for content creation in color managed applications, bad for images and video that end up over saturated in the mostly non-color-managed world of windows (think super rosy skin tone).
  • I found them to have similar pen performance, both generally good. I can talk more about that if you care.

Haven't used them enough to compare performance, but did some brief testing of the two at the Microsoft Store. The thing that immediately stood out most to me was that the VAIO looked considerably cheaper in fit-and-finish vs. the Surface models. Letters, numbers, and symbols looked to be painted on cheaply and it just generally looked to have taken a considerable step back from the premium look and feel of VAIO's Sony days.
