compass calibration every time

Hello,
Is it normal that every time I start the compass in HERE maps the first time since it was powered off it asks me to calibrate?
I don't have a magnetic cover, I had one once but I left it on for only 5 min so I don't think that caused too much damage...

Anyone with the same problem?

Based on my experience, you need to calibrate your compass every time you transfer to a place which has a different magnetic signature from the place you came from, i.e. your room would have a different magnetic signature compared to your car since the metal bars in the concrete and the nails affect the magnetic field of the earth quite differently from the metal body of a car. But once you have calibrated your compass while you're in a certain place, you won't have to recalibrate it until your transfer to another place.

And when you power off and on at the same place?

I am not sure yet about that, since I rarely power my device down... but since it seems that the OS doesn't store any information about "old" magnetic signatures (hence the repeated re-calibration), I guess powering the device down erases the information and you would need to re-calibrate again. It's tedious at first, but the technology is developing, hopefully it won't get in our way often.

I'm hoping that MS would find a way to store and recognize previously stored magnetic signatures in the phone so that there would be no need to re-calibrate every time.
