Cortana and microphone, how can I get it working?

I try to set up cortana but keep getting the message that it does not hear me even though I see the sound moving to the sound of my voice. I have used my computer for skype and another phone application when on win 8. Why doesn't win 10 work. Also device manager says it is working properly. ????

Check your microphone settings on Control Panel (not Settings), have you a mic boost option? Or you can check the levels there as well.

Yes, I had done that but it still says it does not recognize the microphone. Levels are at max. ??? I also used a recording app to record sound and it worked. I recorded a test and it played back fine. It is only Cortana Mike setup that says it can't hear.

I have just noticed that Cortana was turned off but every time I turned it on, it turned off immediately. ????
