Creating an icon for an app, how to start?

Hi everyone, I would like to help an developer make a better icon for my favourite app, but how can I start? What software to use? And any guideline or any template? Thanks

I think this is in the wrong forum. But while I'm here: you should build the icon as an SVG using a tool like Vectr, InkScape or BoxySVG (Chrome extension).

The SVG can then be scaled up and down to various sizes to generate all the icon/tile templates e.g. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...d-patterns/tiles-and-notifications-app-assets

I like to sketch out a few basic designs on my Surface Pro and then I pick one I like and import the sketch into my SVG editor as a background to use as a guide.
