And two years after this thread was started, Windows 8 phone can't do custom alerts and notifications. I have a custom ringtone. That's easy. But I'm frustrated that the alerts sounds are practically indistinguishable from each other. I want to know whether I am getting a text or whether I'm getting a calendar reminder. Custom sounds would make that much easier.

Custom im notifications are now finally allowed in GDR they work the same as custom ringtones and sit in your ring tones folder. Hope this helps they are finally here in the developers preview and should be released to everyone in the upcoming weeks.

I totally agree! I have had this phone for 10 months and still cannot believe a function as basic as custom notification sounds is not available!!! Come on developers...let's get this issue resolved so I can have my Bewitched Twitch sound that I used to have on my Android back!!! The pre loaded sounds are not loud enough or cool enough....

Hi everyone. I'm coming to the party late but can't believe this is still an issue. There is an update available (8.0.10501.127) to fix this issue, and I really can't believe that Nokia has not released it to ATT. I love this phone except for this one issue, and I think others feel the same way. If anyone has any updates or thoughts on this issue, please post them. BTW ATT is being very helpful with this issue but it seems like it is out of their control.
