Zac, I think your 9440 sound is defective. I just tried what you were seeing on my 9440 and had zero issues. I did have an issue with the audio driver at some point due to some software I installed. I downloaded the audio drivers from Dell and reinstalled them... Regardless, the speakers on this are seriously excellent - so something isn't right there!
