Difference between Maps and Here Maps

I was aware that there existed this separate app called Maps, which appeared after Cyan or Denim, I don't exactly remember. If I'm not wrong, they both use the same data to display the map, the downloaded offline maps work for the both. But today I noticed that Cortana uses the favourites from the Maps app. I'd like to know what's actually different in these two apps.

Maps is the one provided and maintained by Microsoft, whereas HERE maps belongs to Nokia (one of those parts that haven't been acquired by MS).
