Digital Compass in HTC surround seems useless

Is there really a digital compass in HTC surround? I tried Mango Compass app, but as I rotate my device on the table, it starts giving the wrong results and it looks confused! Is it the app or the device problem? Any better app to test the compass capabilities?

Both of my LG Quantum and my LG Optimus One (Android) almost never give correct results. I think there are simply too much interference in our environment. Try it outside the city and you might get better results.

First generation WP devices use a "simulated" compass to achieve results using GPS and/or tower triangulation (or something like that). So testing on a table probably won't work. Second generation devices have a real compass.
