lumia 530 - I only use the phone to make calls and text. I do not want to use it for anything else. Do I have to download the critical update?

Critical updates are vital to your phone, they contain performance improvements, battery live your device and also bug fixes, hence its better not to ignore them, I wouldn't have said the same if it was an optional update!
