Do Lumia handsets configure the Access Point settings automatically?

I had a minor problem with my L1020 handset that will not share its Internet connection to the devices connected to its tethering network, but the handset itself was able to detect the SIM card, send/recieve calls, access the Internet.. I was able to get it to share its Internet with other devices by making a fake APN, and then selecting my operator's Access Point.

It seems to happen to this handset only. My other Lumia handsets did this automatically.
